Red Meat Market Research @ Chengdu

Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan Province, is the economic, cultural, financial and political centre of Sichuan Province. It also serves as a logistics hub and the most prosperous and affluent city in Southwest China. With China’s development plan, the city is undergoing tremendous changes and rapid economic development. Rising per capita GDP creates significant opportunities in this emerging market.

With the invitation from the Victoria State Government, Mastlink Australia together with their cooperation partner, Anhui Splendor International Trade visited Chengdu for a field trip to have a deeper insight into the local meat industry including retail, restaurants, wholesale fresh meat market and Chengdu Investment Promotion Bureau.

6th June 2022

1st Event – Meeting with Chengdu Investment Promotion Bureau. Focusing on the Foreign Investment Policy in Chengdu, as well as understanding the frozen meat products (beef, lamb and mutton) markets and supply chain system.

2nd Event – Meeting with the team from Hong Gao Liang Restaurant, a Chinese chain enterprise restaurant to exchange information on the products demand and purchase intentions of the enterprise.

3rd Event-  Co-hosted a dining event, Victorian sheep meat tasting session with the Victoria State Government and Chengdu Restaurant Association, aiming to promote lamb and mutton sourcing from Victoria.

This invitation-only event is only open to the director and head chef of a few major chain enterprise restaurants in Chengdu. The tasting session well demonstrated the potential incorporation of frozen sheep meat into Chinese Cuisine.

7th June 2022

1st Event – Meeting with Yimin Investment Group, a corporate focusing on investment projects in modern agricultural production, food processing, agricultural financial service, retail supply chain, cold storage etc.

2nd Event – Visited Baijia Wholesale Agricultural Market in Chengdu. Wholesale markets play a key role in the distribution of agricultural products locally while considering aggregation of commodities, price formation ad stabilization, diversified demand of consumers etc. A great opportunity for the team to meet up with the local butcher and meat wholesalers and pay a visit to their cold chain distribution centres.

3rd Event – Visited the Food Quality Testing Facility of Chengdu Kaijixing Testing Organisation, an independent third-party agricultural products certification agency that focuses on comprehensive food quality and safety services. They specialise in brand certification, data analysis, industry research and technology development.

4th Event – Meeting with the management team from Shu Jiu Xiang (SJX) Hotpot,  one of the most popular hotpot restaurants chain in Chengdu.

5th Event- Meeting with the directors from Shun Feng Fei Niu, one of the high-end chain restaurants enterprise.
